The addiction recovery process can follow the same basic structure for most addicts and alcoholics.
But it is important to remember that even though we are suffering from the same disease of addiction, we are each shaped by our own upbringing and environment, our past life experiences and trauma, and unique personalities.
Researching your options for treatment before making a commitment will help you find the facility best suited to your needs.
Beginning My Addiction Recovery Journey
When I finally hit my rock bottom, I had alienated my family and anyone who really cared about me. I had lost my job and given up the home I owned. I was a criminal and intimidation and violence were tools I used to meet my substance abuse needs. I was hopeless, desperate, and lonely and the worst part of all was that I knew I was the one responsible for the path my life was on. It was a dangerous path and one that I was certain would eventually end in my death, and I was not sure if death was what I was actually looking for to end my pain and suffering. I was never good at asking for help, but I knew I could not quit the drugs and the lifestyle on my own, so I sought treatment and my addiction recovery journey began.
Steps to Addiction Recovery
Understanding the addiction recovery stages will help you determine the right path for you or your loved one.
Start with a Detox Program
When starting out your addiction recovery process from alcohol or substance abuse, you may need a detox program first. Withdrawing from alcohol and drugs often requires medical intervention, so a skilled detox program can oftentimes be the first step on your road to recovery.
For example, our private home setting at Pacific Crest Trail Detox offers 24 hr nurses and skilled staff will provide you with a safe and caring environment during your 7 to 10 day stay.
After receiving medical-assisted detox, your next step could be to enroll in a rehab program.
Enroll in a Rehab Recovery Program
When you are ready to take steps to addiction recovery you can enroll in treatment with a facility like Oregon Trail Recovery (OTR). A rehab treatment program is the next stage of the addiction recovery process that can help set you up for long term recovery.
Here are the types of treatment, activities, and services you can expect to benefit from during this stage of addiction recovery:
- Medically assisted treatment
- Individual and group therapy sessions
- Support groups
- 12 step meetings at least 5 nights a week
- Wellbriety curriculum and support meetings
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Family Therapy
- Development and maintenance of life skills
- Vocational and/or educational assistance
- Identifying triggers
- Relapse prevention
- Mandatory sponsorship
- Spiritual sessions

- Physical fitness with an emphasis on correlation to positive mental health

Addiction Recovery Timeline
The length of time you are in treatment at OTR is based on your individual needs.
An intensive program with a duration of three to six months is generally required, but if after six months it is determined that you need more time in treatment, we are here for you long term. Your chances at long-term sobriety success increase immensely if you complete the three to six-month treatment program and continue with 12 step meetings after completion of treatment.
The levels of care we provide at OTR are:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
- General Outpatient Program (GOP)
What is Addiction Recovery Like?
During your time at OTR, you will attend daily groups to help you work through the mental and emotional toll that often comes with overcoming addiction and have 1 on 1 therapy sessions where you can go deeper and get even more healing. You will be required to find a sponsor and begin working on the 12 steps.
While enrolled in inpatient treatment and staying in one of our comfortable houses you will feel safe and free of the temptations you may face when you return home. We will provide you with groceries and basic household supplies for you to enjoy while you stay with us, and our knowledgeable house managers will help guide you through your addiction recovery process to help ease you back into a functioning and healthy life.
Continued Sober Living
At OTR we also offer a Sober Living Program to individuals who have completed our treatment program and would like to keep the structure, accountability, and sense of community they have enjoyed while living in our houses. This program is available to you as long as you need it. We will be by your side until you are ready to step back out into life on your own.
